Wait, What? I’m Producing A Game?
So, when I was younger, I used to develop video games using god awful engines such as RPGMaker. Now, through this, I did develop a reasonable understanding of game design.
Presently, I’m in a programming course geared more primarily for video games as well. With that in mind, I’ve decided to revisit an age old title and really bring it up to speed. The game was called Misthalin Memories (and nothing to do with RuneScape - you can blame a friend for the naming scheme).
Misthalin Memories is being designed from the ground up. Any concepts I used to have I now have to re-design and refine, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. The purpose of the game is, quite frankly, to improve on the aspect of role playing found in video games now because I am utterly dissatisfied. Gaming quality has improved, but role playing hasn’t really improved in over a decade and many games even claim to be RPG’s without a single shred of role playing.
The goal is to essentially create a simulator like The Elder Scrolls, but with the level of focus towards the story like in a Bioware RPG. To put it bluntly, I want to structure an incredible story that can be fully manipulated by the player with their available tools in an dynamic environment. I want the player to see situations occur and decide how they themselves get involved. Do you want to join the evil faction? Sure. Would you like to stop a character helping another one from doing something in the story? Go find them within the world and kill them.
I basically want a situation where the main villain can be trying to do something, but the player figures that they can stop the villain by removing his right hand man whom he heavily relies on. They chat with NPC’s and discover, “Hey, the right hand man passes through here regularly” and then come at his expected time to kill him. Suddenly, that causes a huge problem for the main villain. The hero may not be good enough to beat the villain, but he can certainly be good enough to interfere.
I want a dynamic environment, but one that works well for gaming. A completely real time environment like Skyrim, but with a heavily developed story is actually something really difficult. It’s things like this that I need to fix and design, which is why I came up with the ‘Stage Shift’ concept. But I’ll get to that another time.
So, yeah. I’m working on a game and I’ll be talking about it on here too.
